Stephen Fry's directorial debut is a loose adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel Vile Bodies, both a satire and social commentary on the young aristocrats who scandalised pre- World War Two London. We see their gilded world through the eyes of aspiring novelist Adam who, while pursuing the flighty Nina, watches the rise and fall of his rich bohemian friends. The film is full of the educated wit you'd expect from Fry, and it shifts subtly from light to dark as Adam's world gradually loses its carefree sparkle.
