Synopsis

On January 30, 1972, a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland, descended into chaos and tragedy as members of the British Parachute Regiment opened fire on the unarmed protesters, shooting 27 and ultimately killing 14. Director and writer Paul Greengrass's gritty docudrama focuses on the march's real-life leader, politician Ivan Cooper. Greengrass would go on to direct various Bourne films and, though Bloody Sunday is deeply serious, a lot of those films' frenetic style is in evidence here.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
