Sophie is an attractive, emotionally fragile Polish woman who embarks on simultaneous friendships-edging-into-romances in post-World War II New York with two young men in an apparent attempt to forget a dark secret. But as the film progresses, the men - and the audience - get to learn more about Sophie's appalling experiences in the war, and in particular the nightmarish choice she was forced to make.
