Aborigines have appeared as main or secondary characters in Australian films but it is all too rare for films to be all about them, their culture, history and legends. This is a fine, complex film of many layers - partly told in one of the Aboriginal dialects - in which stories branch off other stories and few of the tales are resolved in ways that are conventionally satisfying. It may be confusing, even frustrating at times, but it's always intriguing and at times surprisingly funny.
