No one made grand, sweeping epics on quite the scale or with quite the skill as did David Lean. His penultimate film Ryan's Daughter is a romantic saga set in rural Ireland in the politically charged year of 1916, and is in many ways typical of his work. Sarah Miles is Rosy, the wilful young woman of the title who enters into marriage with a sympathetic older man, a teacher (Robert Mitchum), although she's clearly not yet emotionally ready to settle down.
