The "Scottish Play" becomes a Japanese film as Shakespeare's drama of murderous ambition, Macbeth, is adapted by master director Akira Kurosawa. Toshiro Mifune gives a commanding performance as the Samurai urged to slaughter his way to the throne by his ruthless wife. The price of his goal is his sanity, however, as guilt, fear and horror twist his mind. Reinforcing the universality of Shakespeare's themes, the setting enhances the story rather than distracting from it and shows that there is always a new way to look at an old classic.
Epic set in medieval Japan and based on Shakespeare's King Lear, in which an ageing man splits his land between his three sons, resulting in war.
