Synopsis

An affecting, sweet-natured adaptation of Kate Di Camillo's novel, this 2005 film sees Opal, a lonely young girl, adopt a homeless dog, named Winn-Dixie after the local supermarket. Following Opal's low-key adventures with Winn-Dixie in her Florida home town, the film depicts how the dog helps her make friends, including some enjoyable eccentrics, and improve her relationship with her distant father. A film of meandering charm, it features a touching performance by Jeff Daniels as Opal's dad.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
