Synopsis

Inspired by the life and work of 19th century English naturalist Charles Darwin, this moving biopic reveals the human drama that was the backdrop to his writing one of the most important scientific books ever published, 'On the Origin of Species'. Having studied animals in the Galapagos Islands, Darwin has developed a ground-breaking theory about the evolution of life on Earth, which he aims to publish. But his research contradicts the undisputed word of another book: the Christian Bible. Torn between faith and science, Darwin struggles to maintain his relationship with his wife and is faced with societal opposition to his work. Tragedy strikes within the family, which has a profound impact on the scientist as he strives to complete what will become his seminal piece on the theory of natural selection and the foundation of evolutionary biology.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
