During World War II many British children from inner city families were sent away to live with new families in the country (or "evacuated") for their safety. This could be an emotional and confusing experience for all involved as this adaptation of the novel by Michelle Magorian demonstrates. John Thaw plays the cantankerous widower Tom Oakley whose cosy life is disrupted by the arrival of 9-year-old Willie Beech.
This film includes a WWII theme and some scary moments.
