Synopsis

In recent years the centuries-old view of the pirate has changed from an eye-patched captain with a cutlass to a desperate armed gang toting machine guns. This film traces the fate of a Danish tanker which falls to a band of Somali pirates off the coast of Africa. But the ship’s owners don’t give in immediately to their demands. It’s a gripping, claustrophobic study of forced captivity as well as an intriguing look at the shifting balance of power between the hijackers and the corporations they negotiate with. If you’re wondering who’s looking out for the men caught in the middle – so are they.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
