In 1841, when the majority of black people living in America were slaves, Solomon Northup was one of the fortunate few who had his freedom and enjoyed a comfortable life, working as a musician and raising a family in New York. After being abducted, he was sold at auction to a Louisiana slaver, who forced him to work on a cotton plantation. Unable to prove his status, he endured unimaginable abuse. Drawing upon Northup’s harrowing memoir, British filmmaker Steve McQueen presents a disturbing portrayal of the brutality and injustice of the slave trade in this powerful, shocking landmark drama.
Contains strong violence, injury detail, sex, nudity and racist terms.
