Synopsis

In this strange fairy tale, Arash is a James Dean type punk, struggling to deal with his drug addict father and the dealer who claims to be owed money. He finds unlikely help from an unnamed vampire heroine who stalks the area, preying on men who disrespect women. This unusual Middle Eastern set romance, reminiscent of film noirs, takes place in the fictional setting of Bad Town, but was shot in California (and therefore free from Iranian state censorship). The film is heavily influenced by Western pop culture with its cool soundtrack, skateboarders and graphic novel aesthetics, but also tries to make serious points about modern Iranian society and gender politics amidst the style.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
