Synopsis

Appalling behaviour, noise, clamour and violence are not usually traits associated with the British woman of the early 20th century. But for 15 years fearless females battled with the authorities and society at large, to make themselves heard. From newsreel to comedy, this programme taken from the BFI National Archive captures the suffragettes’ struggle – and how they so innovatively used film to further it – while also offering a fascinating portrait of British life a century ago.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
