Synopsis

In the late 1960s, shy writer Alan Bennett moved to a leafy street in Camden, London. One of its inhabitants is Miss Shepherd, an opinionated, eccentric elderly woman of “indeterminate origin” who resides in her van, much to the consternation of Bennett’s well-to-do neighbours. Taking pity on her, Bennett allows her to temporarily park in his driveway, not realising that she would stay there for fifteen years! As time goes by, Bennett finds himself torn between caring for the woman and a writer’s natural inclination to mine her for good material. Based on a true story, and adapted from Bennett’s popular stage play, this is a witty examination of the writing process, as well as a sly indictment on how we treat the lonely and the vulnerable, with more bite than its cosy exterior initially suggests.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
