Based on the true story of Joy Mangano, inventor of the ‘Miracle Mop’, a cleaning product which established her as a successful entrepreneur in the 1990s. Living in a crowded house along with her divorced parents, her elderly grandmother, an ex-husband in the basement, and three children to bring up almost single-handedly, Joy’s self-reliance and resourcefulness are in constant demand. However, when she proposes to use these skills to start up her own business with an ingenious new invention, support from her family is hard to come by. Told over four decades in David O. Russell’s screwball comedy style illustrated with moments of surrealism, we see Joy shaped by her experiences into the determined young woman who will no longer be held back on her path to success.
This inspiring documentary focuses on a group of young rural Zambian women who defy the odds to establish their own successful business.
