Synopsis

Recovering from a heart-attack, widower Dan is desperate to get back to work as a carpenter but is told by doctors he is not fit enough. Unfortunately, the Job Centre forms don’t recognize his situation forcing Dan to navigate a digital only process despite never using a computer before and look for a job he is unable to take. Exasperated by Job Centre staff he witnesses single mum Katie being told off for missing an appointment and steps in to help, but they are swiftly kicked out and left to fend for themselves. As the two strike up an friendship, Dan helps Katie turn her run-down accommodation into a home while she and her children give Dan the company he has been missing since the death of his wife. A quiet yet revealing film there are as many life-affirming scenes watching Dan and Katie’s goodwill, as well as dreadfully frustrating and sad moments observing them struggling to survive in a system that won’t flex to treat a person as an individual. A thought-provoking film that gives a face to current British political and social issues.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
