Based on the true story of Antonina and Jan Żabiński, the keepers of Warsaw Zoo who used it as a hiding place for threatened Jews after it was partially destroyed by invading Nazi troops. Given permission to remain living at the zoo despite most of their animals having perished during a bombing raid, the Żabińskis hatch a plan to help their Jewish neighbours avoid persecution by offering shelter amongst the ruins of the zoo. However, a close working relationship with Nazi officer Lutz Heck, who plans to use the zoo’s remaining facilities to further his own projects, puts their covert mission under threat.
