Synopsis

Mario Lüthi is an attacker for a top Swiss football team whose form takes a noticeable upturn after the arrival of a handsome new teammate, Leon Saldo, the club’s latest incoming transfer. The two hit it off on the pitch – forming a deadly partnership in games – as well as off it, growing closer as new flatmates. When they share a kiss, their relationship moves to the next level, but Mario is fearful of the reactions of those around him, including his teammates, family and the wider footballing community. After they share a tender moment in public, the club are alerted to the rumour and the pair must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their football image, and ultimately their career aspirations. ‘Mario’ is a timely exploration of LGBT issues in sport – specifically footballers coming out and the surrounding culture – as well as containing themes around sexuality including identity, wellbeing and tolerance.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
