Synopsis

Johannes “Jojo” Betzler is a 10 year-old boy living in Nazi Germany towards the end of World War Two with his mother, Rosie. Having lost all contact with his father who is away fighting in the war, and with his older sister having recently died of influenza, Jojo’s closest confidante is his imaginary best friend: a fictionalised version of Adolf Hitler. One day, Jojo discovers a Jewish teenage girl named Elsa hiding in his house, and threatens to report her to the Gestapo. But when Elsa threatens him with his mother being killed for helping to keep her safe, Jojo agrees not to tell anyone. Over time, and as the end of the war looms, Jojo begins to question his Hitler Youth training and everything else he’s been taught as his friendship with Elsa deepens. ‘Jojo Rabbit’ is a tragi-comedy from satirist Taika Waititi which sees the events of World War Two through the eyes of a naïve child.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
