Set in 1933, this film follows ambitious Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, who has recently gained notoriety for his interview with German politician Adolf Hitler. As he travels to the Soviet Union in order to interview another controversial political figure – Joseph Stalin – Jones finds himself restricted to Moscow and unable to achieve his objectives. Discovering more about the devastating famine sweeping the country, he resolves to expose these failures of the government, risking his life in the process. Based on a real life figure, this story of journalistic integrity also provides an accurate account of eastern-European history and politics of the 1930s.
