Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones and set in England during the 1990s, this film tells the story of Erica Wigg, an orphan child who is dropped off by her mother, a great witch, at St. Morwald’s Home for Children. As Earwig grows up she develops a mischievous attitude, breaking the rules wherever she can and causing havoc around the orphanage. When she is suddenly adopted against her wishes by a strange couple named Bella Yaga and Mandrake, Earwig finds herself in a mysterious house with lots of magical passageways and secret rooms. Determined to make the best of her new surroundings, she befriends Bella Yaga’s talking cat, Thomas, and begins to uncover the mystery of her family origins. This latest film from the world-renowned Japanese animators Studio Ghibli is told with a drastic change in animation style from hand drawn to computer-generated but still aims to capture the magic and excitement of growing up.
