Synopsis

Film writer Corrina Antrobus examines the work of director Ava DuVernay and the barriers she’s broken down for Black female filmmakers. DuVernay was the first Black woman to win Best Director at Sundance, the first Black Woman to direct a film with a $100m+ budget, and the first Black woman to have a film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards®. This video essay looks at how her work has been dedicated to representing and re-framing Black history on screen through the likes of Selma, documentary 13th, and mini-series When They See Us, focusing on themes such as police brutality and incarceration. DuVernay also adapted children’s novel A Wrinkle in Time and cast Black children into the lead roles, a rarity within the coming-of-age fantasy genre.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
