Chronicling the tumultuous journey of young Lawand over several years, this documentary explores the deaf experience through the eyes of a refugee and his immediate family. Arriving in the city of Derby after a perilous journey from Iraq, Lawand suddenly finds his world blossom after he is enrolled at the Royal School for the Deaf, learning how to communicate for the first time. Having never met another deaf person before, Lawand’s journey is one of great personal discovery, but things grow complicated as Lawand and his family face government deportation. Highlighting the obstacles faced not just by its subject but by all Deaf people, this is a moving reminder of the importance of a support system both locally and internationally.
