In 1970, just a few months after the first moon landing, the American space programme seemed unstoppable. Then an oxygen tank exploded on Apollo 13 - a craft on its way to the moon - and the project was thrown into crisis. Back at NASA's headquarters in Houston, Texas the mission control team were left to watch and wonder if the astronauts would get home safely - or be marooned in space. Although this is a drama and not a documentary, the storyline sticks closely to the facts of what actually took place with the mission - working on the assumption that no made-up story could be more dramatic than the real events portrayed.
