Dora Montenegro is a retired teacher who scrimps a wage by writing letters for illiterate people in Rio's biggest bus station. A cynic, she rarely sends the letters on - but her life changes when a ten-year-old boy, Josue, and his mother dictate a letter to Josue's absent father. When Josue's mother is killed, he's left alone in the city with only Dora to turn to. Reluctantly, she takes him in - and as the pair set out on a roadtrip to find Josue's father, their disappointment in life seems to melt away.
