Pi takes the unlikely subject of maths, and builds an intelligent and complicated film around it. Max Cohen is a brilliant mathematician who has retreated from the real world, spending all his time in his flat writing computer programmes and looking for mathematical patterns everywhere. Convinced that he's close to discovering the mathematical key to everything, Max then becomes just as sure that he's being watched by hostile forces. The film is so neatly constructed that it's never clear to us whether Max really is being followed - or whether his obsession with numbers has simply driven him to madness. A memorable story, stylishly told.
