British director Ken Loach has made his name from taking on contentious political issues in many of his films, often using non-professional actors to avoid conventional cinematic conventions. At their best, his films feel like snatches of real life put on screen and there's plenty of that in this excellent account of the relationship between a man from a Pakistani family and a woman from the Irish Catholic community in Glasgow. Far from being just another Romeo and Juliet-type story, this is a warm love story placed in the context of Britain's very complex racial and religious tensions.
