The war in Vietnam provides the backdrop for this (loose) adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. The story follows troubled US Army Captain Willard on his mission up river into Cambodian territory to kill a rebel colonel who has set himself up as a tribal warlord. The ensuing action plays like a road movie, with Willard experiencing first-hand the chaos of a war that has spiralled out of control. Two versions of the film exist, with the 2001 "Redux" cut featuring extra footage - but either one is a astonishing glimpse of the madness of war, and one of the most memorable experiences in modern cinema.
Contains strong violence, gore and strong language.
