Britain's famous Ealing Studios were best-known in the 1940s and 1950s for loveable comedies like The Lavender Hill Mob and Whisky Galore. However Dead of Night was a departure for them, a tale of the supernatural that still creates a potent chill in the air so many years after it was made. Using an omnibus structure in which five different stories are told with another acting as an eerie link between them, the result is a series of scares involving, at various points, ghosts, haunted mirrors, and (most nightmarish of all) ventriloquist's dummies with a mind of their own. It's a classic of British cinema - but be careful it doesn't give you sleepless nights...
