Synopsis

On the surface a chocolate-box musical drama set in bygone days, this is actually a moving and often rather sharp portrait of family life, with some wonderful songs. Judy Garland (famous for playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz) may be in bloomers and hair ribbons - but cast as young Esther Smith, whose father wants to move the family away from their home town just as she's fallen in love, she's dealing with the universal problems of boys, social restrictions and the sacrifices involved when your life is not your own.
