Spanish-Chilean director Alejandro Amenabar's atmospheric chiller helped rescue the haunted-house genre from a schlocky demise. Grace Stewart (played by Nicole Kidman) is raising her two young children in a creepy house on Jersey after World War II, from which her husband has never returned. But the children suffer from a condition which makes them oversensitive to light - meaning the house has to remain shrouded in shadow at all times... all the better, of course, for revealing the house's secrets through mounting tension, sophisticated shocks and chilling twists. The result is a superior tale of the supernatural.
Psychological horror set in Victorian England, as a governess fears for the safety of two orphans in her charge from supernatural goings-on.
