Cecilia is a unhappily married woman working as a waitress in a New Jersey restaurant in the 1930s. As America sinks further into the Depression, she loses her job. Sad and lonely, she goes to the cinema and watches adventure movie "The Purple Rose of Cairo" over and over again. Eventually, one of the film's characters, Tom Baxter, begins to talk to Cecilia directly - and then jumps off the screen and into the real world! Unsurprisingly, this leads to trouble both on-screen and off, as the actor who plays Baxter also arrives on the scene and both he and his character fall for Cecilia. What follows is a clever, witty, and poignant story of the age old problem of dreams vs reality.
This film has a couple of uses of mild bad language.
