In 1901, recently-orphaned 10-year-old Mary Lennox is sent from her home in British India to England to live with her uncle on the Yorkshire Moors in a large country house. She was neglected by her parents, who were killed in an earthquake, and as a result is cold and self-centred. The head housekeeper informs Mary that she will likely not see much of her uncle as he spends most of his time away, leaving Mary plenty of opportunity to explore the grounds unsupervised. She hears strange crying sounds throughout the house and discovers a hidden door in her room which leads to uninhabited areas, including her aunt’s old room which contains a large key. Mary investigates further and unearths a mysterious walled garden to which she now has the key, and begins to spend much of her time in her newfound haven. ‘The Secret Garden’ is adapted from the classic children’s novel and explores themes such as disabilities and inclusion, family, and grief.
During World War I, with their father away fighting and their mother busy as a nurse, five children are sent to stay with their eccentric uncle.
