Onstage in the Broadway show-within-the-movie that lies at the heart of 42nd Street, everybody is working together in sync - dozens of dancers hoofing together in perfect unison. But backstage, brutal individualism rules as those same dancers plot, flirt and lie to get the lead in show. Coming into the mix is naive smalltown girl Peggy, who with the help of more experienced showgirls Lorraine and Ann learns to negotiate the cut-throat theatre world. Raising the stakes of the scheming is the background of the great world economic crisis of the 1930s - with the show a real make-or-break venture for its director.
