Synopsis

An excellent sports movie full of rousing action, Remember The Titans is also a powerful drama that looks at the issue of race in America. The story is set in 1971 in the small American town of Alexandria, Virginia - and the conflict and controversy that results when in an attempt to improve the tense relationship between the black and white pupils of the local high school, a black head coach named Herman Boone is appointed to lead the American football team, with the previous white coach becoming his assistant. The situation is far from ideal for any of the people involved - not least because the new coach has been told if he loses a single game this season, he'll be sacked. With a brilliant performance from Denzel Washington as Coach Boone, this is a thought-provoking sports film.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
