Veteran British director Mike Leigh's film is an unashamed love letter to youth and to life in the city. Set in north London, it stars Sally Hawkins as the irrepressible Poppy, a 30-year-old primary school teacher who always looks on the bright side of life. When her bike is stolen, she takes up driving lessons with Scott and her optimism is tested to the max by his blatant racism and farcical conspiracy theories. When not arguing with Scott, Poppy hangs out in the pub with her flat mate Zoe and goes on a date with a nice social worker. Happy-Go-Lucky is a bright, light film with a dark underside.
Imagine if your idol became your life-coach. That's exactly what happens to a postman from Manchester in Ken Loach's feel-good film.
