When the harsh Taliban government ruled the country of Afghanistan, one of their most famous acts was blowing up a pair of huge statues of Buddha that had stood near a group of caves for almost 1,500 years. In this powerful drama, we follow the life of a young girl who - along with thousands of others - lives in the wreckage under the former home of the statues. Keen to learn to read like the boy in the neighbouring cave, little Baktay will do anything to go to school, but it's not easy for her under the Taliban regime. Although it's set in Afghanistan, this film was actually made by a director from Iran - Hana Makhmalbaf, who herself was only 19 when she made it.
