Based on a tragic true story, this incredibly moving film sees a young Japanese mother smuggle her four unregistered children into a cramped apartment, telling them never to go outside as the landlord will evict them. This means no school, no friends, no life. When the mother unexpectedly leaves, the children are forced to fend for themselves, with no money and no experience to draw from, the going is extremely tough. Haunting and tragic, the film also captures the innocence of childhood in remarkable fashion.
