It's 1966, and Bernie Reubens, a young Jewish boy, is increasingly worried about his impending bar mitzvah. The reason: Bernie's celebration is scheduled for the day of England's World Cup Final against West Germany, and he knows he can't compete. After months of meticulous planning to ensure that his coming of age party is equal to or better than his big brother Alvie's, the day that Bernie had been looking forward to looks set to be doomed as the England team's chances start to pick up.
Contains strong language and moderate sex references.
