A Different Perspective on Life Itself....

4 stars

24 Oct 2017

In the years after the Second World War, a mother and her two children settle in an isolated manor house on the island of Jersey; just off the coast of Britain. With her husband lost at war, Grace is left to care for her children single-handedly. The children have an incurable and severe illness where they must not be exposed to direct sunlight, so the house is full of candles and the curtains are always drawn. This adds extra suspense to their old, creaky house. Two maids and a gardener are hired, and they know the house well. When Anne begins to talk of ghosts and abnormal events, Grace, who is devoutly religious tells her children that the Lord would not subject them to the people of the afterlife. The blame is put on the servants and Grace loses her rag with them more than once. However, Grace becomes aware of supernatural events happening around her, and doubts her previous thoughts. Clever sound and visual effects add an extra edge to this. Psychologically perplexing, this film is bewildering and gives another spin on life itself. "The Others" is very intriguing and has a lot of emotion and feeling. Many unexpected plot twists are cleverly put together to devise an understanding of the events prior to and subsequent to the twists. The characters are played very convincingly, building an exhilarating horror movie which I personally loved. I would recommend it to viewers from the age of around 10+, despite the age rating of 12A. Overall a brilliant film, creating drama and another idea of what other life we live with..
