Into Film Clubs

To celebrate the theatrical release of Abominable on October 11 this year, we created a brand-new cross-curricular resource inspired by the film and ran a creative writing competition too!
Our Postcard from the Himalayas competition tasked pupils aged 5-10 with imagining they had journeyed through China just like characters Everest, Y, Jin and Peng in Abominable and arrived at the top of Mount Everest. They then had to use their descriptive writing skills to write a postcard home to a friend or family member giving an account of their journey and their view of the Himalayan mountains.
Hundreds of entries arrived from all corners of the UK from young people taking their chance to win one of fifteen Abominable goody bags!

On learning that she won, Marguertitte said: "I feel really surprised and proud. I really enjoyed the competition."
Emma Coates, a teacher at Northampton School for Boys, said: "Our Year 7 students enjoyed using the Into Film Abominable resources and had fun thinking about all the possible descriptions they could use for their postcard. The activity sparked their imagination and provided them with an opportunity to be creative."
Catherine Kelly, a teacher at St Teresa's PS Tullyherron said: "We are delighted to receive the news that Emma's postcard was selected as a winning entry. Emma is so excited to win and said she was inspired by the fantastic resource, City Lights to Mountain Heights on the movie Abominable provided by Into Film Club, as well as her own research. We as teachers found this resource really engaged the pupils'interest and provided a fantastic stimulus for the area of creative writing through the media of film. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed exploring these activities and many were encouraged to go to the cinema to view the movie after watching the trailers."
