As the Into Film Festival kicks off around the country with 2021's best films, special screenings and old favourites all ready to be seen on the big screen, there are also a number of new releases to take advantage of too. An aquatic documentary, an intimate portrait of contemporary motherhood and a classic musical re-release are all coming to a cinema near you.
Safety is of course at the forefront of everyone's mind right now so make sure to check out the specific guidelines for your local cinema before visiting. Meanwhile, many cinemas have used lockdown as an opportunity to improve and renovate their venues so that we can all enjoy the best possible cinema experience.

Becoming Cousteau
The protection of our vast oceans is currently a major talking point worldwide and new documentary Becoming Cousteau shows that environmentalists, spearheaded by famous explorer Jacques Cousteau, have actually been calling for greater protection of our oceans for decades. Here we see the incredible life of Jacques-Yves Cousteau who, over four decades, travelled the world, allowing the public to see life under our oceans through his pioneering technology, ocean exploration and underwater cinematography. American filmmaker Liz Garbus uses newly restored footage from Cousteau's archive to dive deeper into his work, inventions and journey to becoming an unlikely celebrity.

Through the Night; West Side Story (re-release)
Through the Night is an intimate and revealing documentary that follows three single mothers whose lives come together at a New York City childcare facility ran by Deloris "Nunu" Hogan, who has dedicated her life and career to caring for children whose parents must work to support them. This portrait of single motherhood and personal dedication portrays the lengths that both mothers and carers will go to in order to make sure children are kept safe and supervised in an economy that does not seem to care about them.
Lastly is the re-release of the classic musical West Side Story in anticipation of the Steven Spielberg-directed remake arriving in cinemas later this year. Originally a Broadway play based on 'Romeo & Juliet', the film takes place in New York and follows two star-crossed lovers in the city streets where bitter gang warfare rages between the Jets and the Sharks. Caught up in the struggle are Tony and Maria, who fall in love despite coming from opposite sides of the conflict. The themes are as relevant now as in the '50s - street crime, tensions around immigration, the American dream - complete with amazing song and dance routines that still dazzle 60 years on.
