New in cinemas this week is Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit, a powerful new drama that's set during Detroit's infamous and racially charged 12th Street Riot of 1967. Also released is Steven Soderbergh's return to the big screen in comedy crime caper Logan Lucky, and a dizzying slice of Japanese anime in the brilliant Your Name.
Our reporter Nada sat down with two of the stars of Detroit, Will Poulter and Hannah Murray, to find out more about their roles and what it was like filming such a provocative and relevant film. Murray discussed how important she feels the film is, as well as her pride at working with a director as renowned as Kathryn Bigelow, while Poulter spoke about developing understanding and empathy for others by listening, and revealed how he takes pride in films that can affect social change, and why film is a great medium to achieve that end.
Set during World War II, this British film sees a young secretary starting a new job, only to find herself thrust into the role of a scriptwriter for the war effort, helping to write dialogue for propaganda films that would appeal to women. This classy comedy/drama shines a light on the oft-overlooked women who helped with the war effort, while offering an empowering story for modern audiences.
