This live-action reboot of the popular children's television animation ‘Dora the Explorer' follows an inquisitive and energetic Latina teenager who has been brought up by her explorer parents in the depths of the Amazon Rainforest alongside her pet monkey, Boots.
When Dora is sent to California to attend high school at her parent's wishes, she finds that her positive attitude and adventurous spirit do not exactly translate well to a school environment. When Dora and three of her classmates, including her cousin Diego, are captured, they discover that Dora's parents have also been kidnapped. Escaping into the jungle, they resolve to track them down and uncover the mysterious Lost City of Gold. This charming children's adventure film contains themes of family, exploration and learning how to be yourself.
Also released in cinemas this week, the UglyDolls make their way to the cinema. Based on the plush toys of the same name, this musical animation takes place in Uglyville, a town where faulty and strange-looking dolls are left. When the leader of Uglyville tells them that it's impossible for them to ever find a home, Moxy, who longs for a child to love her, embarks on a journey with her UglyDolls friends to prove this wrong, finding the ‘Institute of Perfection', where perfect dolls are prepared for the outside world. With lively musical numbers, this story about embracing your imperfections, offers a great place to discuss anti-bullying, self-esteem and mental wellbeing with younger students.
Arriving on DVD this week is a fresh, comedic take on the world of superheroes with Shazam! Billy Batson is a streetwise 14 year-old living in Philadelphia with the Vasquez family, consisting of his foster parents and five siblings. A series of events turns the teenager into an adult superhero with various powers which he and his friends gleefully put to the test. But the duo soon discover that Billy has been given these powers for a greater reason, and together must find and neutralize an evil doctor who has unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins upon the world in this comedy-fantasy set in the DC Universe.
