Earth Day, held this year on Wednesday 22 April, and is an incredibly important time to mobilise and educate young people around essential environmental issues.

First established in 1970, the Earth Day Network is going completely digital for its 50th anniversary and this year will be based around the theme 'Climate Action', recognising the enormous challenge, but also the vast opportunities, of action on climate change that have distinguished it as the most pressing topic for the event's half centenary. It is also, of course, a particularly pertinent theme for young people who are set to inherit a vastly different world than previous generations and have therefore spearheaded the climate change movement in recent years.

There are a number of ways to get involved, first and foremost through Earth Day's various tips and action advice. We also have a whole host of materials to help you engage with the day through film, including our newly updated Eco Explorers resources (with Scottish and Welsh language versions) and recommendations for the best environmentally-themed films to stream from home. We also have resources around climate-themed films Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon and A Beautiful Planet, some important archive and youth-made films, and a fascinating interview with Chasing Coral director Jeff Orlowski. Check it all out below!

Stay tuned for much more from us throughout the year around environmental issues, including the 2020 Into Film Festival in November. As you may remember, we kicked off the 2019 Festival with simultaneous pupil premieres of environmental documentary 2040 across the UK, many of which featured a live streamed Q&A with director Damon Gameau. The film proved an incredibly effective tool in engaging young people with the various aspects of climate change in a more positive way. If you fancy checking out 2040and its corresponding film guide - the film was recently released on DVD on 6 April.
