This week, the popular BBC series 'Horrible Histories' gets the big screen treatment, taking us back to Roman times and serving up an hilarious slice of European history.
Atti is a resourceful Roman teenager whose wits more than make up for his lack of physicality. But when his latest scheme lands him in hot water with Emperor Nero, Atti is forced to join the Roman army and exiled to cold, wet Britain where they are attempting to quash the rebellion. Here he meets a formidable warrior Boudicca, and joins her quest despite the protests of her overly-cautious father. Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans is both fun and educational, a laugh-out-loud, lively introduction to ancient history and how it compares to the modern day.

The Current War; Birds of a Feather; Are You Proud?
Also making its way to cinemas this week is the fictionalised account of the invention of electricity, The Current War. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon as his inventing rival George Westinghouse, the film covers of one of the history's most important technological battles and is a dazzling and informative film for young audiences.
Next up is Birds of a Feather, a bright and colourful CGI animation that follows Manou, a young bird whose world is turned upside down when he discovers he is actually a swift and not a seagull like the rest of his family. With voice work from Kate Winslet and Willem Dafoe, it promises to be a story of overcoming the odds and discovering who you are.
Finally, Are You Proud? is a prescient and urgent documentary covering the history of LGBTQ+ rights and the societal battles which have been fought in at attempt to secure equality. Informative, engaging and important, this film is ripe for young people who wish to delve further into the history of sexuality and oppression around the world.
