Congratulations to Hilderthorpe Primary School Film Club, in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, whose environmentally-conscious animation Save Bobby the Fish has won Best Film: 11 and Under (Sponsored by Warner Bros. Creative Talent) at the Into Film Awards 2020.
Save Bobby the Fish - a previous Film of the Month winner back in September - sees a small fish named Bobby who finds that his friends have become trapped in a plastic-littered ocean so sets out to find a way to free them. Watch the winning film above.
Note: All films nominated for the 2020 Into Film Awards were filmed in 2019 or early in 2020, prior to any COVID-19 distancing regulations.
The Into Film Club at Hilderthorpe Primary School has been running for two years, and with upwards of 40 club members, has proven incredibly popular. Young people at the school enjoy watching and reviewing films together, as well as coming up with ideas for our own films.
The children that worked on Save Bobby the Fish are in Year 5 and 6 and their ages range from 9-11 years. They chose the subject of the film themselves, as a result of their school being just a few hundred meters from the coast of the North Sea, and plastic pollution being something they all feel very strongly about.
Plastic pollution is getting worse and we need to act. We hope that our film will make people want to be part of making our world a plastic free place!
Into Film Award winning filmmaker Lilly Broadbent (age 9)
After coming up with the initial idea of raising awareness of plastic pollution, the children decided to collect every-day plastic to form 'ecobricks'. Some of this plastic was then used to create the creatures in the film, to demonstrate the huge impact that plastic waste has on marine life. The film was created using stop/start animation, and the poem that forms the narrative was written and performed by all the children involved.
Club leader Rachel Lees commented: "Plastic pollution is such an important issue in the world today, and living by the coast, this is an issue that the children feel strongly about, and they have worked so hard to get their message across".
I am so proud of every single one of the children for what they have achieved and I really hope they are proud of themselves.

The Into Film Awards ceremony was due to take place in March 2020, with David Walliams as host, but was sadly unable to go ahead as planned due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, Walliams was still on hand to host our virtual ceremony, and you can see the moment he announced Save Bobby the Fish as winner in the clip below.
