Into Film Clubs
Find out everything you need to know about starting an Into Film Club.
Congratulations to Laura Chivers and the Into Film Club at EGLAM (Eden Girls' Leadership Academy, Manchester) who have won Into Film Club of the Year (sponsored by Lucasfilm Ltd.) at the 2022 Into Film Awards. The award was presented by TV presenter Ben Shires and TikTok star and PE and dance teacher Miss Mustafa.
Laura Chivers has been running the Into Film Club at EGLAM since September 2017, when the school first opened, and brings students from across a range of year groups together to interact with one another, make friends, and share opinions on film. "We've found that watching a range of films has helped develop our imagination and vocabulary, whilst helping us to understand a variety of different stories", said one club member.
The club at EGLAM encourages and facilitates open discussions around different genres of film, and uses film as a doorway to discuss wider issues within society. "We particularly enjoy diverse films that are based on female empowerment and allow us to see ourselves (as women of colour) and other powerful female role models on screen in the films we watch", explained one club member. "Most importantly, everyone's opinions and choices for films are taken into consideration".
Our Into Film Club is important to us, as it allows us to see ourselves represented on screen, and we hope it encourages others to engage with more diverse films, or even to start up their own Into Film Club!

During lockdown Miss Chivers set up a Microsoft Teams channel to ensure that she could continue running her Into Film Club remotely. "We recommended films to each other, created and took quizzes, and Miss Chivers gave us weekly updates of films available for us to watch online for free. It really helped us at a difficult time. Nothing stopped Miss Chivers running her Into Film Club!"
EGLAM use the Into Film+ streaming service to watch films, and it is now a regular feature of their film club. "Into Film+ has massively increased the diversity of the films we watch and made running the film club much easier than before", said Chivers. "It's a safe space for students to come, meet friends, access well-being strategies and use film as a strategy to discuss the world around them".
Review writing is another aspect of the Into Film offer that EGLAM are enthusiastic about, boasting several Review 500 winners in recent months.
