Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles is another fascinating documentary, this time taking a deep dive into one of the most well-loved and successful musicals in Broadway history, Fiddler on the Roof. The film explores the political climate of the time and the defiance of a musical that centred a marginalised community, as well as its themes of race, gender and sexuality.
This live-action reboot of popular children's television animation Dora the Explorer follows an inquisitive and energetic Latina teenager who has been raised in the depths of the Amazon Rain-forest by her explorer parents alongside her pet monkey, Boots.
When Dora and three of her classmates, including her cousin Diego, are captured and discover that her parents have also been kidnapped, they resolve to track them down through the jungle and uncover the mysterious 'Lost City of Gold'. This charming children's adventure film contains themes of family, exploration and learning how to be yourself.
American music and British politics collide in Blinded by the Light, a coming-of-age drama about an English-born Pakistani teenager who discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen, finding the inspiration he so craves. Set against the backdrop of Britain in the turbulent 1980s, when racism and xenophobia was dividing the nation, this is an uplifting musical comedy with key themes around community, growing up and cultural differences.
Uglydolls, meanwhile, is another film about identity and self belief but much more suited to younger audiences. Based on the plush toys of the same name, this musical animation takes place in Uglyville, a town where faulty and strange-looking dolls are left behind. With lively musical numbers, this story about embracing your imperfections, offers a great place to discuss anti-bullying, self-esteem and mental wellbeing with younger students.
