To celebrate the recent cinema release of Migration, we launched a brand-new cross-curricular learning resource. Migration: Habitat Heroes is a two-lesson sequence that immerses pupils aged 6-12 in an epic journey inspired by the world of the film.
As part of the resource, we ran a competition challenging learners to come up with a habitat, initiative or invention to help wildlife stay safe within urban environments - because Migration's Mallard family learn the hard way that the city is full of hazards!
Congratulations to Juniper, aged 6, from St. Eugene's Primary School in Omagh, Northern Ireland, whose entry was chosen as the winner out of over 300 entries!
Juniper's entry, 'Super Pollinator Nectar Bars', is an app-based system for helping city-dwellers transform their balconies and patios into havens for butterflies and bees. The app would offer urbanites a simple guide to growing native plants in their outdoor spaces, and encourage them to reuse often discarded household items like pots and tubs.
Juniper has won a Migration merchandise pack, plus a Conservation Kit worth £140 to make pollination dreams a reality at St. Eugene's! Congratulations, Juniper!
"When my teacher said I won the competition, I got butterflies in my stomach. I felt really excited and I can't wait to see what I won and I am so proud of myself. As a member of the Eco Council I feel delighted to have the opportunity to help our topic of biodiversity, I really feel like the conservation kit is going to help. I can't wait to see what comes in the merchandise pack; I am so excited. Thank you for choosing my invention, I really loved taking part in this competition.
I liked the Migration lessons too. I like the ‘interview homework'. I liked interviewing someone, I think the interview learning sheet helped me learn more about my daddy. When it came to our local area observation sheet, I liked going outside for the lesson, I loved identifying what was a plant and what was an animal. I loved seeing what areas needed improvement because I am on the Eco Council. I think this activity helped me bring ideas to the Eco Council and my teacher. This activity helped me to observe my local area more, for example I love listening to the birds and helping worms when they stuck on roads or pavements. Our teacher even took us to the cinema to see the Migration movie! It has been the best topic!"

Migration: Habitat Heroes, created in partnership with Universal Pictures and Illumination, engages learners with the awe-inspiring natural world and the vibrancy of urban wildlife.
Drawing on the Migration trailer and the experiences of the film's feathered flock of characters, the resource supports the National Education Nature Park Policy, and makes links to science, geography, art & design, PSHE, citizenship and English/literacy.
Activities exploring habitats, migration and biodiversity plunge pupils into the wonders of wildlife, and offer opportunities to explore how growth comes from embracing new experiences.
